Change Isn’t Comfortable, But It’s Necessary

There’s a quote from The Art of Strategic Leadership by Steven Stowell that has stuck with me:

“The rationale is, ‘Why go to the effort of doing something different if what we’re doing now seems to be working pretty well? We know what the outcome is going to be.’ Some leaders can’t overcome the pressure of discomfort—forward-thinking leaders seek out change deliberately because they have the desire to make things better.”

I agree with this 1,000%. It’s easy—too easy—to go to work, follow the same routines, and settle for “what works.” The problem? Doing the same thing day after day might be comfortable, but it doesn’t lead to growth. And let’s be real: it’s boring.

Here’s why the best leaders lean into change, even when it’s uncomfortable:

1. Stagnancy Drives Talent Away

Employees who value professional growth and learning opportunities won’t stick around if they’re not growing with you—or if they can’t learn from you. When your team sees you pushing boundaries, streamlining processes, or adopting new tools, they’re inspired to level up too.

2. Automation and AI Make Change Easier

Today, we have access to tools that can make work faster, smarter, and less stressful. Automation can take repetitive tasks off your team’s plate. AI can provide insights, streamline communication, and even help with decision-making. If you’re not exploring these, you’re not just missing out—you’re falling behind.

3. The Future Demands Forward Thinking

It’s not enough to just keep the lights on. Leaders who thrive are always asking: How can we do this better? How can we make this easier for our teams? Embracing change isn’t about chasing every new trend—it’s about finding the tools and strategies that align with your vision and values.

My Challenge to You:

This week, ask yourself:

  • What’s one process or task my team does that could be improved?
  • Is there a tool, strategy, or technology that could make it faster, easier, or more effective?
  • Am I setting an example of growth and adaptability for my team?

Because here’s the thing: If you’re not growing, you’re standing still. And in today’s fast-paced world, standing still is just another way of falling behind.

Let’s make growth—and change—our comfort zone.
